The Foreign Trade Plus vocational school class at Lämmermarkt in Hamburg embarked on an educational trip through Japan in October, which took them from the vibrant streets of Osaka to the idyllic tea plantations in Uji. This trip was a fascinating fusion of culture, business and unforgettable experiences for the whole group. Our three trainees report on their impressions in the following travelogue.

Due to our deep connection in the tea trade with Japan, we were keen to combine cultural experiences with business aspects on this trip. Japan embodies a unique mix of tradition and modernity. This trip was far more than just an educational trip for us, it was a feast for the senses.

The lively streets of Osaka: a mix of tradition and modernity

As soon as we arrived, we plunged into the hustle and bustle of the city thanks to the city rally organized by our classmates. The "Osaka Mecha Festival" presented the artistic diversity of Japan in an impressive way, while the historic Shitennoji Temple illustrated the country's deep spiritual dimension. We were delighted by the mixture of tradition and modernity and the lively atmosphere of Osaka and recommend it to every traveler!

Tea production and the breathtaking tea plantations in Uji: an unforgettable treat for all the senses

The visit to our green tea producer Maruyama Tea was particularly impressive. There we were able to see how the tea is made. On the way to Uji, we were presented with a wealth of impressions: The landscape was simply breathtaking and radiated a deep sense of calm. In Uji itself, our excursions to the tea plantations were a real highlight. Not only were we able to learn the secret of the perfect preparation of matcha tea, but we also gained a deep insight into the fascinating Japanese tea culture. Our home-made matcha tasted delicious. A huge thank you goes to Maruyama for this unforgettable experience!

Kobe: Strategic port location and international trade relations

One of the most important ports in Japan is located in Kobe. Its strategic location on Osaka Bay has made it a central hub for international trade. The city is also known for its exquisite Kobe beef, which is prized worldwide for its high quality and tenderness. Chinatown is a vibrant and culturally rich area, known for its variety of authentic Chinese cuisine, traditional temples and lively markets. In addition to many cultural impressions, we also experienced an abundance of flavors. During a visit to a chemical company in Osaka, which also has a site in Hamburg, we gained valuable insights into global trade relations. At the Nada Gogo Sake Museum, we learned about the production of sake and the importance of rice wine for Japanese culture.

Kyoto: A glimpse into Japan's rich history

Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, is known for its impressive temples and shrines. A visit to this city is like traveling back in time to ancient Japan. This city combines culture, history and nature in a fascinating way. Visiting the Fushimi Inari-Taisha, the Gion district and the Noh Theater gave us a deep insight into Japanese tradition. The chairlift ride, which offered us a breathtaking panorama of the city, was particularly unforgettable.

Farewell in Osaka after a visit to the botanical garden

We rounded off our fascinating and exciting trip perfectly with a visit to the calming teamLab Botanical Garden in Osaka. This magical place glowed in the dark, offering us a spectacle of light and color with its artfully designed light installations that enchanted us. With unforgettable memories in our hearts and a touch of melancholy, we had to say goodbye and set off on our journey home. Some of our class continued the trip individually.

This trip was a wonderful mixture of tradition and modernity, nature experiences, city adventures, culinary highlights and hospitable encounters with the Japanese people. We were deeply impressed by the diversity of the country - we will never forget these experiences!
